Using a Little Common Scents

The following is a brief guide to using some of the more popular aromatherapy oils. They are listed by the symptom, with the appropriate oils following. This list is meant to work in conjunction with 'Working With the Wheel' and other complimentary pages. Again, I stress, it is not a replacement for professional treatment, but rather it is meant as a complementary guide to bring to you the healing of Mother Nature. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have but please, if you are in any doubt, consult a professional practitioner.

Scents for Animals

Although this page is primarily about aromatherapy oils and their uses in complimentary medicine, I feel it is worth mentioning also theraputic massage and Dr. Bach's flower remedies. I think you will have great success in using these, and if you have not tried alternative treatments previously I think you will be very pleased indeed with the response. However as always I must stress that these are in no way a replacement for veterinary consultation. Use these suggestions responsibly and in conjunction with professional advice, and remember to give thanks in all things.

Animal Aromatherapy Suggestions...
Essential oils have been used since Biblical times and beyond to successfully treat many ailments. Their success has been documented in animal use also from tiny kittens to huge Shire horses. Animals often respond better to aromatherapy and other alternative treatment than humans because they have not learned to be skeptical.

For small animals [small dogs, cats, ferrets] use 3 - 4 drops in an appropriate carrier oil per application, for medium sized animals [medium sized dogs, small goats, pot bellied pigs] apply 7 - 8 drops in an appropriate carrier, and for large animals [giant dogs, small horses] use 10 - 12 drops in an appropriate carrier. If you are treating larger horses, chimpanzees or elephants please adjust the doseage accordingly! I do not recommend using the oils neat, and at no time should oils known as Phenols be used on any members of the cat family.

For animals not having hooves [including humans!], oils can be applied to the pads of the feet for quick absorption. For those with hooves, apply the oils along the spine and massage them into the skin.

A quick guide to basic animal treatments...

*Insect and Parasite Repellant: lavender, citrinella, eucalyptus [put a few drops of each with some water in a spray bottle, shake and spray over area]
*Nervousness: geranium and lavender, Dr. Bach's rescue remedy
*Sinus Blockage or Inflammation: massage eucalyptus into the temples and sprinkle around the bed
*Shock: lavender, rosewood, chamomile, Dr. Bach's rescue remedy
